Sticker & certificate
Passing stations issue a windshield sticker and/or certificate (paper or electronic) as proof of inspection. Validity periods, placement, and replacement rules are set by each state. Keep paperwork until the next cycle and set a reminder so registration is not blocked.
What proof means
| Artifact | Typical role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pass sticker | Visible proof on vehicle | Month/year or program coding varies by state |
| Certificate / report | Transaction & records | May be required for title/transfer (MD MSIS) |
| Rejection sticker / fail report | Documents defects | Not a pass — see failed inspection page |
| E-certification | Electronic program record | Used in some MSIS / modernized workflows |

| Missouri | Biennial odd/even model-year framework; keep MVI proof for registration cycle | RSMo §307.350 · MSHP MVI | Missouri |

FAQ
Where should the sticker be placed?
Follow the inspecting station’s instructions and state program rules (typically windshield placement for cars). Motorcycle placement differs — ask the station.
What if my sticker is damaged or stolen?
Replacement rules are state-specific. Contact an authorized station or the program agency; do not create a DIY sticker. Verify procedures on official pages.
Does a rejection sticker count as a pass?
No. Rejection/fail documentation means you did not pass. See Virginia §46.2-1158 and related rules for rejection stickers.
How long is a certificate valid?
Validity tracks the program cadence (annual VA/HI/NC-style; biennial MO odd/even; MD transaction-driven). Confirm dates printed on the sticker/certificate.
Is an e-certificate different from a sticker?
Some programs (e.g. Maryland MSIS e-inspection) emphasize electronic certification for transactions. Keep both electronic confirmation and any physical proof the program issues.
Can I renew registration without the sticker?
In periodic-inspection states, a current inspection is often a registration gate. Confirm with your DMV/DOR — FindSafetyStations does not process registrations.
