Louisiana safety inspection requirements

Louisiana is ending the statewide personal-vehicle safety inspection sticker requirement. HB 1085 (2026) removes the requirement to display a safety inspection certificate for most personal, non-commercial vehicles effective Jan 1, 2027. From June 30, 2026 through Jan 1, 2027, officers may not cite solely for missing/failure to produce an inspection certificate, and Louisiana State Police reported ceasing sticker-only enforcement. Commercial vehicles and school buses can still require inspections. Some localities (e.g., New Orleans area programs) and Clean Air Act I/M parishes may retain separate requirements—verify locally and with LDEQ/OMV.

Who must comply

As of our 2026-10-01 review: most personal vehicles are in a transition period with sticker-only enforcement paused, and the personal safety-sticker mandate ends Jan 1, 2027 under HB 1085. Commercial/school bus inspections and parish emissions programs may still apply. Keep vehicles mechanically safe under general equipment laws.

Cadence & fees

Cadence: periodic safety sticker being eliminated for most personal vehicles (see summary)

Fees: Former MVI sticker fees are being phased out for most personal vehicles under HB 1085 (2026). Emissions/local programs may still charge separately where required.

What stations check

  • Historical MVI covered brakes, lights, tires, and related safety equipment under LAC Title 55 Part III
  • Going forward for most personal vehicles: no statewide periodic safety sticker (confirm commercial/local/emissions exceptions)

Fail / retest

Not applicable for statewide personal-vehicle stickers during/after the HB 1085 phase-out. If you still need an emissions or local inspection, follow that program’s retest rules.

Scenarios

  • Registration renewal with an expired sticker
  • New resident registering an out-of-state vehicle
  • Purchase/transfer where the buyer needs a current inspection
